North Downs Society Ltd
The Abbeyfield North Downs Society is a charity that provides ‘home from home’ accommodation for older people on a not-for-profit basis. The North Downs Society is a member of Abbeyfield UK and related by the Care Quality Commission and the Homes & Communities Agency. The Society celebrated its 25th Anniversary in 2011.
In the mid 80's a group of Oxted residents had been concerned about the lack of accommodation for older people who were no longer suitable for sheltered housing and needed more care. Led by David Gresham they set about finding a suitable site and raising the capital to build. David Gresham House was opened in 1986 and has gone from strength to strength with two further extensions in 2002 and 2011.
Today there are 5 flats offering sheltered living and 29 residential rooms. The sheltered accommodation is for the more active; the remainder provides accommodation for those who are frail and need 24 hour care.
