Overview

Since it was built in the mid/late 1800s, St Mary's House has retained its unique atmosphere thanks to keeping many of its beautiful original fetatures. In fact the bungalows to the rear of the property were even converted from the original stables.

All rooms are unfurnished, so you can bring your own furniture. The onsite deputy house manager ensures that the house is warm, comfortable and safe, and that the daily meals provided are varied, nutritious and enjoyable.

The house itself is set back from the road behind a wall for privacy, with shallow steps leading up to the house. There is a large lawn to the front and a series of small courtyards to the rear.

Some of the residents have rather delightfully chosen to grow plants near their room. A large new conservatory has been added to the lounge - a lovely area which has quickly become the favoured place to sit and relax.

St Mary's House is managed by Abbeyfield Berkhamsted and Hemel Hempstead

Life at the house

Our residents are quite independent, with just a little bit of support when you need it, and you can come and go as you please. We organise an active social life, and we encourage residents to suggest activities or interests, which the staff will then try and organise.

Some activities include:

• Weekly coffee mornings
• Bring and buy sales
• Guest speakers
• Musicians to come in to entertain the residents
• Programme of speakers
• Classical music mornings
• Knitting circle
• Quizzes
• Local amateur dramatic society performances
• Annual Garden Party held in the beautiful garden at our house at Sibley's Orchard

Two delicious freshly prepared home cooked meals are provided each day by the deputy house manager in the dining room.

The main meal is at lunch time: meat or fish with a selection of vegetables, for example cottage pie or a roast dinner.

Residents have the facilities to prepare their own choice of breakfast in their room, so have the freedom to have it as early or as late as they wish.
