Welcome to our house

Abbeyfield House is well situated, near the centre of Brecon town centre, with superb views towards the stunning Brecon Beacons. Built in the 1970s as a centre for young people with learning disabilities, the house was then purchased in 1997 by Abbeyfield Brecon Society.

Abbeyfield House is a very friendly community, in a safe and attractive setting. We have twelve residential flats created to provide retirement accommodation. Each of our flats have a separate living room, bedroom and en-suite shower room, and some flats are large enough for double occupancy, and all flats on the first floor are served by a lift. Our flats come carpeted and unfurnished so that you can make it into your home. Personalise your room with your favourite pieces of furniture, photographs and trinkets to make it feel like home.

Residents make their own breakfasts in their flats whilst lunch and lighter evening meals are provided in the communal dining room. We have a laundry room and a bathroom on each of the two floors, together with a room for hairdressing.  There is Wi-Fi access throughout Abbeyfield House so you will be able to use all your devices, develop your skills on the internet and keep in touch with loved ones.

Our professional and caring House Manager and her staff ensure that our premises are kept warm, comfortable and safe, and that meals provided are both enjoyable and nutritious, with much produce sourced from our gardens and locally.

The staff are on hand every day to offer support, and both Trustees and volunteers form part of this network of support for residents.

Located in a quiet part of the charming town of Brecon, we are in a pleasant and friendly town with a range of shops, a thriving theatre and cinema and a beautiful Cathedral. You'll also find a selection of banks, a Post Office, Library, Doctors’ Surgery, several dental practices and chemists, a cottage hospital, ambulance services, and various denominational Churches.

Brecon boasts many thriving local clubs, societies and walking groups. Supermarkets are in abundance, as are coffee houses and pubs, some serving excellent food. Most of these are within walking distance of Abbeyfield House, or you may wish to avail yourself of the town’s Dial-a-Ride service at a modest cost, with plentiful taxis also available. Brecon Market days are Tuesdays and Fridays and the Market Arcade also has several other interesting shops, and often hosts other events during the year.

There are a number of annual cultural events to enjoy in the local area such as the Brecon Jazz Festival, Brecon Baroque Music Festival and in nearby Hay on Wye, the famous literary festival with celebrity guests from all over the world.

Brecon has a particularly warm and historic relationship with the Gurkha army who often parade through the town with great dignity in their magnificent uniforms, and a visit to the Regimental Museum will bring you face to face with artefacts from the famous “Rorke’s Drift” Zulu battles, and first and second World Wars. Other items of historic interest may be seen in the Memorial Chapel at our beautiful Brecon Cathedral.

There is a regular bus service to nearby towns and to the capital City of Cardiff, with the bus station just a 10 minute walk from the house. Brecon is a major tourist centre for walkers, hikers and nature lovers. It also has a proud military tradition and is still a centre for infantry training.

News & stories from Abbeyfield House

What our residents say

The balance between socialising in one’s flat and having well prepared community lunch and tea is good. I enjoyed sitting out last summer in the lovely grounds and the entertainment that was put on.

Resident at Abbeyfield House

I couldn’t have found a better place for pleasant company and support. The staff are particularly helpful and caring in a and the sound of laughter is never far away. The meals together also provide a chance for light interchange and the growth of friendship. It is a blessed place.
