About the property

The Gables is a converted villa located just a short bus ride from the centre of Darwen. It provides supported housing for nine older people in single en suite flats.

We have a delightful communal lounge so there is always somewhere to enjoy the company of others. There is also an attractive well-maintained garden so that you can sit out and take in the fresh air and sunshine.

Our team are dedicated to providing a nurturing home from home environment for our residents.  We invest in the continued professional development of our staff to ensure the highest standards of support and service.

Abbeyfield is dedicated to providing accommodation to all over 55s who may be isolated or require support to maintain independent living and our charges are designed to be affordable to all.

Meet our staff

Patsy Bellusci

- House manager

A long- time Darwen resident, Patsy has been the house manager at The Gables since its launch as an Abbeyfield House in 1981. She has been recognised through the Raising The House Profile Award and piloted the Gables to the Gold Star Award in 2012. She has always lived on site and is supported by husband Guido who also acts as a volunteer. Patsy involves herself and her staff in professional development.

Emily Bellusci

- Deputy house manager

Emily has been with us for fifteen years, latterly as deputy house manager. She is a long term, loyal and caring member of staff. Emily is a highly creative person skilled in table decoration, cake making and flower arranging. She is a popular contributor to coffee mornings and social events.

Lucy Bellusci

- General assistant

Lucy is another popular member of staff, joining us from University. The residents’ birthday presents and the common rooms at Easter and Christmas have been greatly enhanced due to her creative faculties. Equally, vital tasks in supporting cooking, cleaning and washing are completed with the minimum fuss and maximum efficiency.

Arts and craftsWe are very much part of local life with regular support from community groups and volunteers. Residents are supported to remain both physically and mentally active, and enjoy a varied social calendar of organised activities throughout the year.

The opportunity to share a daily lunch and evening meals, as well as other social activities, means no one needs to feel alone or isolated.

We organise a number of social activities and events, especially suitable for older people, so there's always something to keep you occupied or to look forward to.

The Gables’ residents form a happy community of their own but are always mindful of the needs of others, both locally and farther afield. Last year Operation Christmas Child seemed a natural, useful and positive thing to do and our community enjoyed putting the gifts together to send to children abroad. For over ten years they have supported a technical college in Rwanda.

For the last two years the pressing local need of hungry families was the choice of the thoughtful residents. A wide range of provisions have been gathered and conveyed to the food bank off Olive Lane, Darwen, by volunteer Guido Bellusci. At Easter 2015 there was an Easter egg and gift collection prepared for several local projects.

Regular activities include:

• Coffee mornings
• Afternoon tea
• Arts and crafts
• Gentle exercise classes

Ad hoc events include:

• Pub lunches
• Day trips to local attractions
• Birthday parties
• Summer garden party
• Christmas party
