Established in 1984 with donations from Bury Council and the late Mrs Templeman. Farraday House in Bury offers 13 supported living studios. The accommodation comprises of fitted wardrobe, kitchenette with microwave, kettle and under counter fridge; bedroom with fully tiled en-suite shower facilities. Our supported living facility is unique in Bury as we provide 3 meals a day, cleaning facilities and laundry service. Residents like to personalise their accommodation by providing their own furniture and belongings which help to make them feel at home.

“Comfortable and homely, just like being in your own home.”

– Dorothy, assisted living resident

In 2016, after taking advice from Abbeyfield National, the Trustees agreed to extend Farraday House to accommodate independent living. The project was completed in September 2016, providing 12 apartments. The apartments contain a fully tiled wet room, open plan lounge and kitchen and separate bedroom(s). To personalise their apartments, tenants provide their own furniture and belongings.

All apartments are fully occupied and we have a waiting list of 17 prospective tenants. This has proved to be a successful and popular new venture in the life of Abbeyfield Bury Society Ltd.

For those looking for companionship, whether they are residents or tenants, our Housekeeper provides tea/coffee/biscuits and the daily newspapers in our newly refurbished conservatory each morning except Tuesday, when these refreshments are provided in the communal lounge where you will find a large selection of books and jigsaws. Alternatively, weather permitting, why not spend time in our recently landscaped gardens – the perfect place to meet and catch up with each other, family or friends.

Farraday House is situated between Tottington and Bury Town Centre with frequent bus links between both locations with a bus stop just a short walk away. In the picturesque village of Tottington, you will find a selection of restaurants and cafes; supermarket; Post Office; GP’s and a variety of independent shops. Bury Town Centre has a Metrolink tram service to Manchester with links to Rochdale and Oldham. Bury also boasts a steam railway line, The East Lancs Railway, hosting many themed events that are extremely popular.

Life at the house

“I love it here, you can forget your troubles and go to coffee mornings for a chat with your friends.”

– Ron, independent living tenant

We understand the importance in providing a range of activities for our residents/tenants to help benefit their health and well-being, making them feel happier. The activities at Farraday House include morning coffee, bingo, armchair aerobics. We have visits from opticians, the Blind Society, chiropodists and hairdresser. Our Memory Box sessions have also proved popular. Every few months, we have visits from local businesses providing gifts, toiletries and clothes for our residents/tenants to peruse and purchase. Our residents from our sister house, Abbeyfield House in Radcliffe also join in our activities at Farraday House.

Our Housekeeper at Abbeyfield House organises trips out for all our residents; recent events include a trip to Oswaldtwistle Mill in Accrington; afternoon tea/dancing in Blackpool Tower and a visit to a local patisserie. Each year, we hold a Christmas party and a garden party in the summer which are perfect events to invite family and friends to. In April 2019, we held an Opening Event to celebrate our new extension which was officially opened by the Mayor of Bury. The day was a huge success with all our residents/tenants, their families and friends, and colleagues joining in our celebration.

“I would highly recommend Farraday House to anyone considering a move to more suitable accommodation for either themselves or a family member. My Father has lived in one of the independent apartments for over 18 months and really enjoys living here. Making a decision to move into more ‘senior’ accommodation is a difficult one for many but Farraday House genuinely feels like a home from home. The apartments are spacious, comfortable and are carefully designed for the challenges which come with age. The wider building is secure and all areas are well-kept. The location itself is ideal, with close proximity to Bury and Tottington, it encourages independence.
The management team / staff genuinely care and take the time to help residents and their families. This is a key factor for me as I work full-time and having that back-up is important and has made a big difference on occasion. The residents are encouraged to come together if they wish to do so with a weekly coffee morning and more recently a fortnightly lunch club with other events taking place from time to time. There are communal areas for you to enjoy as a family including the newly completed garden and patio area – we just need the weather now!”

- Katie, daughter of Norman, independent living resident.
