Overview

Abbeyfield House Walmer is a lovely home with a warm and friendly atmosphere.
The house is an accessible single storey building with 9 studio-sized room, one two-bedroomed flat & a guest room, offering our residents private accommodation with en-suite facilities.

The property is surrounded by substantial mature gardens which features a lovely garden house and a working allotment providing fresh vegetables to the residents.

There are a number of events and activities for residents , as well as a friendly hairdresser who visits weekly - offering a reasonably priced service to the residents in the comfort of their own rooms.

The house staff are available every day of the year and there is always a friendly face to sit with in the communal lounge, for a chat or quiet companionship. The lounge has a communal TV and this is used regularly where residents can often be found completing a crossword in the Daily Newspaper.

Residents are also invited to join in with Residents Meetings held once every 3-months,
Residents have the option of taking up an extra cleaning and washing support package.

A selection of library books are provided by the local authority library service and these are changed once every 3 months.

Life at the house

ScrabbleAt our house we offer residents a variety of activities.

Activities include

• Morning coffee and biscuits each morning at 10.30am in the lounge
• Scrabble Afternoon on alternate Mondays in the lounge at 2pm. This is a volunteer lead activity, and there's always time made for tea, biscuits and a chat!
• Monthly visit from the Pastoral Team of St Marys Church offering a non-demonational Holy Communion to all our residents. This is held on the second Wednesday of each month at 2pm in the lounge.
• Three monthly held residents meetings are held in the lounge. Always a good opportunity for residents and staff to get together.
• Golden lunches are held throughout the year. These lunch clubs are a good way of inviting local residents into the house to join our residents for a meal and a chat. Volunteers from the local church support and help to ensure these lunches are good fun for everyone. Another feature of these lunches are the free raffle with gifts and prizes provided by Friends of the House.
• Throughout the year we hold craft, summer & Christmas fayres. With support from the local press, Town Mayor and a local choir, these events are always such a success with our residents and local community.
• December is always a busy month at Abbeyfield Walmer with special lunches, church visits and a visiting pantomime being some of the activities on offer.
• Christmas day is always a special day at our house with residents, families, staff & volunteers. Along with the traditional lunch, presents, games afternoon and a get together around the TV at 3pm to watch the Queens speech. We also offer elderly members of the local community, identified as being alone at Christmas, a chance to come and join us on this special day.

KitchenWe provide a balanced diet for all our residents, with special dietary requirements catered for.

We offer a two course traditional lunch at 12.30pm followed by a cup of tea or coffee. This meal is a home cooked meal of meat or fish accompanied by seasonal fresh vegetables, and is followed by a pudding, which can be anything from homemade bread and butter pudding to banana split.

Our residents are encouraged to let staff know if they have any preferences and we will do our best to accommodate.

Teatime is at 5pm and this is a traditional tea and can be anything from egg & bacon to a homemade soup. This meal is usually accompanied by cakes, fruit or a small cold dessert.

Food plays a very important part of life at our house as it provides the residents a chance to have a chat and eat together in the pleasant dining room.

Residents have their breakfast in their own rooms, with cereals, teas, coffees, bread, marmalade and milk provided for by the house. Residents are able to take this meal at their leisure without the rush to get to the dining room at a set time.

A local volunteer has an allotment within the gardens at Walmer House and residents are  provided with a wonderful range of fresh flowers and vegetables throughout the year.   Vegetables served at lunchtime will have been picked just a few hours before. Potatoes, beetroot, runner beans, green beans, spinach, tomatoes, courgettes and lovely sweet peas are just some of the produce grown in the allotment.
