When a local sheltered house in Wessex was badly affected by a fire at Christmas, Activities Coordinator, Louise from Abbeyfield Wessex Society didn't hesitate to offer her skills and support to the residents.

Regularly visiting the residents, who have been housed in the next door Premier Inn, Louise is the embodiment of community focussed and takes board games, organises entertainment and provides a friendly face for the residents.

We caught up with Louise to find out more of what she's been doing.

First of all, Louise can you tell us a bit about who is it you are helping?
We are helping the residents of Wellington Court in Westbourne after some of their flats were damaged by a fire that happened on the morning of Thursday 16th December. They have been housed in the local Premier inn, which is next door until their flats are ready for them to go back to.

And what is it you are doing?
We stepped in to provide activities as some of the residents are unable to go out, so we take activities to them and provide companionship and little entertainment.

What kind of activities are you running with the residents?
We are taking along games such as Scrabble, Dominos, card bingo and some quizzes. We've had a singer come and perform for an afternoon and soon we are inviting everyone to Westbourne House for a buffet lunch.

How have the activities been received so far?
It's been really positive so far. There was obviously some upset at their home being affected by fire so we wanted to provide a little light and companionship where we can. The residents have all said how much they've enjoyed the activities and having us to talk to.

Why do you think it's important that Abbeyfield does this kind of community engagement?
I think it’s important that Abbeyfield does this kind of engagement as we have strong community links and as well as welcoming the community into our houses, we also like to be out in the community helping as much as we can. It is also important because the residents of Wellington Court have been through a lot in the past few months and although they are being supported it is nice to offer support in other ways and to offer activities that may not be a priority. It’s important as we are a friendly face that will listen and help as much as we can.

And to be honest, I enjoy seeing the residents of Wellington Court as much as they do me.

What do you love most about your role at Abbeyfield Wessex Society?
The thing I love most about my role at Abbeyfield Wessex Society is meeting new people and being able to visit each house to offer different activities for the residents. Each house is different, and no two days are the same. I also love spending time with the residents and getting to know them as individuals.
