Overview

Thornton House and Cusack House are on the same site - Orchard Close - a link way joins the two houses enabling their facilities to be shared. Thornton House was built in 2009, and is a home from home, offering support when you need it from our professional and caring house staff and volunteers. Thornton House has ten two-room apartments with en-suite wet rooms. They are all unfurnished, so you can bring your own furniture, making it truly a home from home.

There is a lift between floors, and the house is fully accessible for wheelchairs and other mobility aids. Residents can gain additional support from a Careline provider 24 hours a day. Each resident is provided with a pendant and has a support system in their room to contact the Careline.

The Abbeyfield Winchester Society Ltd is situated in Twyford, a lovely semi-rural village four miles from Winchester. Twyford’s Doctors Surgery is approximately 10-15 minutes walk away. The village shop is close to the Surgery, and has a post office with banking facilities, and a coffee shop. Regular bus services run from the end of Bourne Lane to Winchester and Eastleigh. There is also an active volunteer group that offers help with transport for local, elderly residents.

Communal facilities include:

• A spacious lounge in Thornton House, perfect for coffee mornings, and entertaining friends and family.
• A dining room in Thornton House, where you can enjoy meals freshly prepared by our catering team.
• Four pantries where residents can make their own breakfasts and refreshments.
• A conservatory in Cusack House, with a wonderful view of our extensive and mature gardens.
• Beautiful landscaped gardens, which residents are encouraged to help out in.
• Two bathrooms with facilities for the disabled, one of which is used by our mobile hairdresser.
• A guest room in Cusack House, great for visiting family and friends, and available for a nightly fee.
• A snug in Cusack House, perfect for watching tv, reading or catching up with family and friends.

Residents’ rooms are cleaned regularly by house staff, but those residents who are able to and wish to do so, may carry out these tasks themselves. Residents bed linen, towels and personal items are laundered by the house staff.

Our aim is to provide a relaxed and friendly atmosphere where residents can remain as independent as possible. Living with us allows you to enjoy the privacy of your own room or apartment, while being part of a friendly and active community.

What's on the menu

We provide two meals a day consisting of a two course lunch and a light tea in the evening. There is an emphasis on fresh food and home cooking. Meals are served in the Thornton House dining room, making them a social occasion. Residents make their own breakfast at their leisure in one of the four pantries located in the two houses.

Coffee and tea are served twice a day, and in the afternoon we have home-made cake. Although main meals are normally served in the dining room, arrangements can be made for meals to be brought to a resident's room if they are feeling unwell. Residents are consulted on their likes and dislikes and dietary requirements, and alternatives are always offered.
