Overview

Drake Lodge has been completely refurbished to the highest standard, a new extension was opened in 2009 and the rooms in the original grade 2 listed building modernised in 2010. The accommodation comprises of 17 en-suite bed/sitting rooms and 1 flat. Six of the rooms are in the original 1890’s building and twelve rooms in the extension.

There are gardens for residents which have been redesigned with raised beds for ease of accessibility if residents enjoy gardening. There is ample parking for residents and visitors. Visits by friends and relatives are welcome, and we have a guest room available for a small charge. Two nutritious home cooked meals are provided each day in the communal dining room, and breakfast needs are provided to the residents in their own rooms.

Each room has a TV aerial, telephone point and a care line system. Residents are free to furnish their rooms as they wish, carpets curtains and cupboard space are provided. There are two laundry rooms providing washing/drying facilities.

Life at the house

Outings are organised by an active House Committee during the year to local places of interest. We have recently visited Cotehele, a National Trust House to see the Christmas garlands, Buckfast Abbey, Mountbatten, the Plymouth Aquarium, Roadford Lake, Dingles Heritage Fairground. Suggestions for places of interest to visit are always welcomed.

We have the benefit of a room (Woburn Room) purpose built for activities, here there are numerous talks, musical afternoons, quizzes and any other entertainment requested. The Woburn Room has a wi-fi connection, and there are weekly computer classes held.

The residents regularly hold informal talks/quizzes in the lounge and there are games on a Sunday afternoon.

Our People

A warm friendly atmosphere is created by our dedicated staff, led by the House Manager. Staff are on site every day from 8.30 to 6.30. We do our utmost to make our sheltered home a comfortable and supported environment for our elderly residents.

The Society has an Executive Committee, who are Trustees with full legal responsibilities. They are responsible for development, public relations, and communication with the National Society at St Albans and the Regional Strategy Head. They all oversee the repair and maintenance of the house, budget and finances.

The House Committee made up of local volunteers, is responsible for the day to day running of the Society. Each resident is linked to a member of the House Committee so that any problems arising can be shared.
