The Shanklin Abbeyfield Society was the first to open a sheltered home on the Isle of Wight in 1964 and was opened by Lord Mountbatten.

Four years later a second home was opened in Shanklin. Later on the society received a large legacy from its First Treasurer, Ann Harwood, who was the first female Bank Manager on the Island and believed to be the second in the country.

This legacy enabled the society to demolish one of the older houses and build a new housing complex that consists of 16 self contained apartments on its site. This is the sheltered home we see today, still offering elderly people a supportive environment to retire in.
