Welcome to our house

Located in the historic town of Bedford, a town of two halves; home to a multicultural, cosmopolitan and international community, filled with restaurants and shops from societies all over the world, as well as a town that still maintains its traditional Victorian heritage, is home to Darell Jeffreys House.

Built in 1904, the house was sold to Abbeyfield in 1982 by Dr Darell Jeffreys and his wife who had a real connection with the older people in their community. They were thrilled to sell their house to a charity who helped older people live later life to the fullest, and today we still have excellent connections and support from the local community, councillors and MPs.

Since then Darell Jefferys House in Bedford has undergone several transformations. We’ve had four extensions allowing us to increase the number of residents who can live with us and overall room size. In total, we have four double flats, one single flat and 10 en suite rooms, which all come unfurnished allowing you to bring your favourite pieces of furniture and personalise your room with treasured pictures. Every room comes with its own fridge and the flats have washing machines included.

For peace of mind and extra security, all residents are given a pendant alarm, ensuring you feel safe and secure any time day or night. Our wonderful team of staff and volunteers are dedicated to creating a home from home for our lovely residents.

Our spacious garden plays host to many events which are open to the community and your friends and family, but is also a great location to sit and relax in the sunshine watching the wildlife or get to know the other residents.

Ideally located, we’re close to Bedford town centre and have excellent transport links, with bus stops and the train station within walking distance. In the local area there is plenty to keep you entertained and busy, we have the Higgins Museum and the John Bunyan Museum, theatres, swimming pool and leisure centre, Bedford river embankment, Bedford park and local supermarkets and churches.
