Statement: Abbeyfield West Herts Society, Tannerswood

Alastair Mulvie, Director of Marketing and Fundraising, The Abbeyfield Society said today:

After discussions with Abbeyfield West Herts Society (AWH), it has been agreed that The Abbeyfield Society (TAS) will, effective immediately, take over operational management of Tannerswood on an interim basis.

Our first decision has been to withdraw the notice of closure. We have commissioned a new survey by TAS building contractors who will assess the building’s fire safety and renovation needs, and the extent and cost of any works required. A decision on the future of Tannerswood will be made once the detail of this new survey is known and will follow a detailed and full consultation period with the residents.

TAS is committed to fully exploring all options for keeping Tannerswood open. However, we must also be clear that – pending the building assessment and full consultation with residents – a closure may take place in the future if no other viable alternative can be found. TAS are committed to making sure residents play a full and active role in deciding the future steps we take, and we will be regularly engaging with them as this process moves forward.

If the level of renovations required mean residents are unable to remain at Tannerswood for either a temporary or permanent period, they will be fully informed about the reasons for this decision at least 90 days before we begin the moving process. In the event of a closure, I can also confirm that TAS will ensure all residents are given the option of moving to the nearby TAS managed Abbeyfield service in Kings Langley, allowing them to remain living together.

Members of the TAS senior management team met with residents and their loved ones this lunchtime (Friday 1st February) to inform them of this decision and to set out our plan to address their concerns.

We will continue to provide support to residents throughout this process.
