Welcome to James Smith House. Built in 1900, our home was originally an Edwardian town house. Renovated in 1996, our home now offers older people a space to retain their independence whilst remaining as part of a social and active community of likeminded people.

Located a short car journey from the city centre of Sheffield, our home is close to restaurants, cinemas, the theatre, coffee shops and local amenities.

Our home is made up of 11 rooms, all en-suite. Rooms come unfurnished to allow residents to add a personal touch to their space with favourite items of furniture, family photographs, ornaments and trinkets. We also allow residents to redecorate their room to appeal to individual tastes.

Our communal lounge and dining room provide a space for residents to get together to enjoy activities, watch TV or catch up with friends and family in. We encourage residents to invite their friends and family whenever they like and love it when they join in with our events.

For friends and family visiting from afar, or for those wishing to extend their stay, we have guest facilities available.

Our garden and patio complete the house – you can often find residents enjoying the sunshine on the patio or pottering in the garden.

Parking is available on site.

Laundry facilities are also available.

What’s on the menu

Meal times are one of our favourite times of day at James Smith House – it’s when we all come together as a family to discuss the day ahead and enjoy a tasty, home cooked meal.

Breakfast is taken in residents’ rooms to allow a leisurely start to the day. Followed by lunch and dinner, cooked by our staff, in the dining room.

All dietary needs are catered for and suggestions form residents regarding the menu are welcomed.

Deborah’s most popular recipe is “Yorkshire Tea Loaf”

1. Soak 125g of mixed dried fruit over night in half a cup of strong, hot tea with 100g Demerara sugar.
2. Pre heat the oven to 180C, 350F or gas mark 4.
3. Grease a 450g loaf tin, sift 200g of self-raising flour and rub in 25g of butter.
4. Add one beaten egg and the soaked fruit, plus the tea in which the fruit was soaked (having removed the tea bag).
5. Mix well.
6. Pour the mixture into the greased tin and bake for approx 1 hour.
7. Slice and butter, serving with cheese if desired – delicious!
