Overview

Welcome to J F Latimer House. Our home sits in the substantial estate of Danby Lodge with two other Abbeyfield homes, Sir Charles Starmer House and Earl Keelan House.

Our home offers older people the space to retain their independence whilst remaining part of an active and social community which we would love you to join.

Your Room

Our home is made up of ten rooms, one two-bedroom flat and one one-bedroom apartment. Some of the rooms are en-suite but all have access to communal bathrooms located throughout the house. Each room comes with a small kitchenette, complete with a fridge, and beautiful views over the gardens.

Residents can furnish their room with their favourite pieces of furniture, ornaments and photos from home to make the room their own. There is also the possibility to repaint or hang your own curtains should you wish.

Communal areas

Our home has a communal lounge and dining room which residents are encouraged to use at your leisure – after all it’s your home. Family and friends are always welcome to visit and use these facilities, as well as join us for lunch, dinner or coffee mornings.

As mentioned, we have substantial grounds which residents are encouraged to help maintain. Several of our residents tend to their own flower beds and help staff grow fruit and herbs year-round.

Staff

Our staff are extremely dedicated to Abbeyfield and embody the Abbeyfield ethos. Kath, our house manager has been with Abbeyfield for two years and made a big impact across all three houses.

Joining Kath are Sue and Cathie, both house keepers who combined have been with Abbeyfield for over 15 years.

Extra services

Laundry is offered as a service to all of our residents but should you wish to do your own there are laundry facilities in the house.

Ample parking.

Life at the house

From guest speakers to theatre visits, gardening club to scrabble there is always something to look forward to and something to suite everyone’s taste.

Every Saturday the three houses get together for a coffee morning and raffle. And each Sunday afternoon we join together for afternoon tea and a catch up.

Some of our favourite activities include:

Wine tasting
- Music appreciation
- Film Society
- Armchair Aerobics

We also host annual events in and with the local community. These include:

- Visits to farm shops
- Christmas lunch at a local restaurant
- Annual garden party
- Trip to the local pubs

Local area

We’re based at the end of a leafy, quiet cul-de-sac with excellent transport links into the town centre. For those who enjoy walking, we’re just a short stroll away local amenities and a beautiful park which often hosts summertime activities.

We also have several churches nearby for anyone wanting to partake in regular worship.

What's on the menu

Mealtimes are a highlight of our day at Abbeyfield Darlington. Each day starts with breakfast, taken in residents' rooms for a leisurely start to the day.

Our staff prepare a two course meal every lunchtime, hosted in the dining room, followed by high tea in the evening where residents have the choice of several dishes.

We always sit down to a traditional Sunday roast with all the trimmings and often enjoy an impromptu bacon sandwich or French breakfast during the week.

Other items often found on our menu include:

- Braised steak with mashed potatoes, carrots, cauliflower and broccoli
- Poached cod with cheese sauce, new potatoes, broccoli, peas and beetroot
- Homemade rhubarb crumble and custard
- Homemade pecan pie and ice cream

Residents are consulted regularly about food choices at our Residents’ Voice meeting where we encourage their feedback and suggestions.
