The Abbeyfield Barnard Castle Society Limited is a charity that provides "home from home' supported accommodation for older people.

The Abbeyfield Barnard Castle Society was established in 1967 as a non-profit making company. It is registered as a Charity with the Charity Commission. Although completely independent, The Barnard Castle Society is affiliated to the National Abbeyfield Society. It fully supports the Society's purpose, which is to provide the over 55's with their own homes within the security and companionship of small sheltered households.

Our sheltered home, Abbeyfield House on the corner of Galgate and Montalbo Road, is located centrally to local amenities and was previously a Doctor’s home and surgery. It was built in 1891 and purchased and after 1967, was converted to provide five flats (four of which are on the ground floor), four bedsitting rooms and one double room.  In addition we have a twin guest room with an en-suite shower room which is available for family and friends to use when visiting residents. We also provide laundry and cleaning services to meet your needs so you can remain as independent as possible without having to maintain your own home.
