Armstrong House was opened as an Abbeyfield House in 1980 to provide supported living for elderly people who wish to remain active and independent.

The house was part of the Armstrong Estate where it was used by the workers and their families of the estate for holidays and recreation. Today it provides a great location to offer supported housing for older people. It has 12 studio flats, lounge, dining room, laundry, guest facilities, conservatory and an attractive garden for residents' use.

The Abbeyfield Bamburgh Society is part of the national Abbeyfield movement. This was established by Major Richard Carr-Gomm in 1956 in response to the loneliness and isolation he found amongst older people in East London. Since then, Abbeyfield has grown to be one of the largest organisations in the voluntary sector serving older people.
