Some of the practical things you need to consider when moving

Moving home involves lots of organising and arranging things which can be daunting, but we’ll help to make it as simple as possible. This means that you can settle into your new home with the least amount of upheaval. Moving brings with it many changes, and this page suggests some of the things that you’ll need to think about before and during the move.

House selling or giving notice on your rent

You’ll need to sell or give notice on your current home. If you own your own property then you’ll need to get it on the market as soon as possible. We suggest that you talk to three local estate agents to find out the current market value of your home and also to confirm the fees they’ll charge to sell it for you. Then choose the one that gives you the most confidence. Speak to people you know in the area and ask them if they have any recommendations, or if they know anyone who has recently moved house, as word of mouth can be very important.

Once the property is under offer, you’ll need to find a solicitor to help you with all the necessary paperwork.  Again, make sure you confirm the costs they’ll charge you before making a final decision on who to use. Most estate agents can recommend someone local, as they deal with them all the time.

If you’re currently renting, once you’ve confirmed what date you’ll be able to move into your chosen house or home, you’ll need to advise your landlord that you’ll be giving notice on your rental agreement and confirm the date when you’ll be moving out.


You’ll need to tell your utilities such as electricity, gas and water that you’re moving and make sure that they (or one of your friends or family) can read the meters on the day you move so they can close your account and send you the final bill.

You’ll also need to update the details on your TV licence, and inform companies such as your internet or broadband provider, satellite or cable TV provider, landline telephone provider and your bank or building society.

Forwarding mail

Think about any other letters that you regularly get sent, e.g. pension providers, shares, premium bonds. Make a list of all the things you regularly receive so that you can let them know your new address. Even if you think you’ve thought of everything, it’s always a good idea to arrange for the Royal Mail to redirect any post going to your old address for three or six months to make sure you haven’t missed anyone.

Your GP

If you’re relocating to a new area then you’ll need to register with a new doctor and find a new dentist – the house or home will be able to help you with this, as they will know the local area and be able to recommend places that other residents are registered with.


If you’re downsizing then you may want to plan quite far in advance what items of furniture you want to take with you. Each house or home varies, so make sure you discuss with them beforehand how much room you’ll have for any favourite belongings. There are lots of charities who will come and collect any unwanted pieces of furniture and redistribute to people who need them.

There are also websites such as Freecycle where members of the public will come and collect any items you don’t need. It always takes longer than you think to have a good sort out, so try and allow as much time for this as possible.

New home

Try and visit your new home at least a week before you move to familiarise yourself with the layout and facilities, and arrange for a friend or relative to be with you on moving day so they can help the move go smoothly. Our staff will also be on hand to help you settle into your new home.

Friends and family

Last but not least, remember to let all your friends and family know your new address. As soon as you’re settled, you can then welcome them to your new home and start creating lots of new memories.
