Welcome to Abbeyfield House!

Our home offers supported living to older people wanting keep their independence but remain part of a warm, caring and friendly community.

Located in the heart of Sutton, our home is close to all the hustle and bustle of city life, but tucked away in a residential area allowing residents to enjoy the peace a quiet of suburban life.

In total we have seven en-suite bedrooms, plus an extra living space for our live-in housekeeper. All rooms come unfurnished allowing residents to bring their favourite pieces of furniture, ornaments, photos and trinkets from home. Residents are also welcome to decorate their room to their taste. Each room has a compact kitchenette space complete with kettle, toaster, fridge and sink.

Our home also has a communal lounge, dining room and large garden, all of which are full accessible. We are also home to two cheerful budgies, Billy and Tilly – current residents are hoping there might be some baby budgies on the way soon!

Pendant alarms are issued to every resident living at Abbeyfield House to alert staff at Tunstall if you fall or need urgent help. Our housekeeper also lives on site and is on hand to assist residents throughout the day.

Laundry facilities are available for use by all residents, but help is provided by our staff if needed. Washing powder is provided but we often find residents have their favourite brands so use their own.

“I like living here, it’s so homely. The house has just seven residents which means you get to know each other on a deeper level – just like a real family.” – Resident at Abbeyfield House.

“I made the decision to move to Abbeyfield House when I found myself alone in my house. I previously lived in a four bedroom house on my own and was paying for a cleaner and gardener and thought ‘why am I doing this?’. I used to visit a friend who lived in another Abbeyfield so knew it was the place for me.” – Janet, Resident at Abbeyfield House.

Life at the house

At Abbeyfield House we live and breathe the Abbeyfield ethos, so activities are a big part of life at our house. We host lots of different activities throughout the week and invite the local community in to the house for our larger monthly events.

Residents often suggest new ideas for activities and these are always rotated in where possible.

Some of our favourite events include:

- Coffee morning every Friday.
- Games afternoon every Thursday.
- Bingo, with prizes to be won.
- Cheese and wine night.
- Jigsaw library.
- Exercise classes.

We also love birthday’s at Abbeyfield House. All residents are given a little gift and thrown a party to celebrate their day, with friends and family invited.

Recently we celebrated Janet’s 80th birthday which happened to coincide with Harry and Meghan’s Royal Wedding so we combined the two occasions for a mega-bash. Friends and family came for the day and enjoyed cake, wine and plenty of chatter about the wedding.

What's on the menu

Our housekeeper Tracy is a brilliant cook, our residents speak so highly of her abilities. She goes above and beyond to make sure that her food not only tastes delicious but is presented beautifully too.

Two meals are provided daily to our residents, with breakfast being taken in their room to allow a start to the day that suits them. Milk, bread and other breakfast essentials are provided but special requests can also be made.

Lunch is taken in the dining room and is a social hour with residents sharing their plans for the day ahead. We reconvene in the evening for a light supper, also taken in the dining room.

Sample dishes that can often be found on our menu:

- Gammon with cauliflower cheese, seasonal vegetables and roast potatoes.

- Liver and bacon with all the trimmings.

- Shepherd’s Pie.

- Angel delight is a real favourite with our residents, as well as home made cakes and treats.

Commenting on the cuisine at our Sutton house, a visiting local restaurant critic said, "The room is bright, cheerful and friendly.  The food was well-cooked, delicious, and served with a smile.  No wonder the residents were in such good form!  One told me that her favourite meal was the Sunday roast.  On the day I went for lunch, we feasted on boeuf bourgignon, with tender pieces of lean and well-seasoned meat presented in a lovely sauce (or, if you prefer, gravy).  This was accompanied by excellent roast potatoes and well-cooked vegetables, followed by apple flan with a choice of ice cream or custard.  Heaven!"
