Life at the house

We believe in enjoying later life and an Abbeyfield house will always offer residents the opportunities to get involved in activities and entertainment - which are a big part of life in our houses!

We offer an extensive activity programme within our Supported Houses, with our teams dedicated to coordinating events. We understand the importance of our residents’ emotional and physical well-being, and keeping active and enjoying later life is crucial to this.

Keeping active is important for older people and we offer numerous opportunities for residents to stay active, but it’s always the residents choice to get involved, with their independence and choice always being respected.

Dining areaJust imagine: two beautifully prepared and nutritious meals cooked for you twice a day.
No need to think about what you’re going to have to eat; no need for food shopping; no peeling, washing, chopping or washing-up.  From time to time you may be asked to help with laying the table, or clearing.  Apart from that, all you have to do is enjoy the food.

Commenting on the cuisine at our Sutton house, a visiting local restaurant critic said "The room is bright, cheerful and friendly.  The food was well-cooked, delicious, and served with a smile.  No wonder the residents were in such good form!  One told me that her favourite meal was the Sunday roast.  On the day I went for lunch, we feasted on boeuf bourgignon, with tender pieces of lean and well-seasoned meat presented in a lovely sauce (or, if you prefer, gravy).  This was accompanied by excellent roast potatoes and well-cooked vegetables, followed by apple flan with a choice of ice cream or custard.  Heaven!"

Occasionally, volunteers act as guest cooks in one of the houses.  They can contribute anything from local specialities, to exotic new tastes from different parts of the world.  Variety, dare we say, is the spice of life!
