Overview

Welcome to Abbeyfield House, our Grade II listed building is a home from home for older people looking to retain their independence but remain part of an active and social community.

Our home is made up of nine en-suite bedrooms which were renovated in 2013. The house also has a large communal kitchen and dining room, lounge and garden.

All bedrooms come unfurnished allowing residents to add their own personal touch with favourite items of furniture. Residents are welcome to decorate their room to their own taste, be it with new curtains or carpet.

Our wonderful housekeeper Jean keeps Abbeyfield House running smoothly and takes care of residents’ well-being. Jean lives on site and is on hand throughout the day to assist residents. Having worked at Abbeyfield House for 12 years and with Abbeyfield for years before that, Jean is well-versed with all things Abbeyfield. As one resident said, “Jean is everyone’s mum.”

As a home we are active within the local community, often connecting with local groups and other Abbeyfield Southern Oaks Houses for events and activities. Each Thursday is Volunteers Day at Abbeyfield House, we are very lucky to have volunteers come in to cook and converse with our residents - it’s a day we all look forward to.

“I moved to Abbeyfield House to be closer to my daughter. She said ‘we need to keep you close dad, you never know what trouble you might get up to if you’re too far away’ – we did laugh. I’m pleased I did move though, I very much enjoy my life here, it’s everything I could have hoped for.” – Gordon, resident at Abbeyfield House.

Life at the house

Activities, events and outings are part of our everyday life. There’s never a dull moment at Abbeyfield House, we’re always up to something. Here are just a few of our favourite events that we’ve recently organised:

- Boat trip down the Thames.
- Educational visit to Bletchley Park.
- Afternoon Tea at Grumpy Mole.
- Scrabble club on Wednesday evenings.
- Monthly coffee mornings with freshly baked cakes.
- Church service each month with hymns played on the piano.

But by far, our favourite trip is our visit to the local pub every three months for a pint of ale and brandy.

As well as all of this our residents also manage their own kitty and put the money collected towards different trips. They are totally in charge of where we go – it’s ran for and by our residents.

What's on the menu

As you can see from our photos, food is very important to us at Abbeyfield House. Our menu is varied, freshly prepared and made using local ingredients where possible. The kitchen is the heart of our home with staff and residents gathering around our island to chat and catch up.

Breakfast is taken in residents rooms with the necessities provided by Jean. Lunch and dinner are served in the dining room as a family.

Some of our favourite dishes often found on our menu include:

- Shepherd’s pie.
- Roast beef with all the trimmings.
- Pork pie with accompaniments.
- Lemon sponge.
- Fruit Salad.

Residents are consulted on all menu choices and welcomed to input suggestions. All dietary requirements are catered for.
