Overview

Welcome to Abbeyfield House in Dulwich, London. We provide a peaceful, friendly atmosphere where residents can remain as independent as possible. It's a home from home with support when you need it.

Our large Edwardian House was built in 1904, renovated in 1998 and again in 2012. Many of the original features of the house have been retained and mixed with modern features for living today.

At Abbeyfield House we are very proud of our home, the staff and volunteers that run it, and the local area which we all love so much.

We have a range of staff including volunteers from such professions as law, accounting and former school heads. All staff are skilled in befriending older people and enjoy creating a friendly and caring experience for the elderly residents.

Our home has six single occupancy flats and a one bedsit, all en-suite. All rooms are unfurnished allowing residents to bring their favourite pieces of furniture from home, along with photographs, ornaments and trinkets to personalise their room. Completing our house is a large dining room, living room and stunning garden.

You can often find our residents sitting together in the lounge, catching up on the day ahead or watching their favourite programmes. And in summer, the residents enjoy sitting on the deck soaking up the sun and watching the birds fly into the garden.

Little extras

Each resident living at Abbeyfield House is given a personal safety bracelet when they move in which links to our 24 hour warden call system. We also have a stairlift and laundry facilities.

In the area

Abbeyfield House is situated in an attractive and safe area of South London, with Brockwell Park and Dulwich Park nearby. There are shops, cafes and pubs in easy walking distance. Local public transport by bus and trains is very good, both to the West End and the City. For most of the day the trains run every 15 minutes.

Dulwich Village looks much as it did 80 years ago and there are few high-rise buildings in the area. There are many playing fields nearby and, for Central London, the area is green and open.

This house is managed by Abbeyfield Dulwich.

Life at the house

Residents at Abbeyfield House lead independent lives and enjoy the freedom to come and go from their home at their leisure. We often host family and friends for dinner and welcome visiting guests throughout the day.

In summer we host a well-attended summer party in the garden and come Christmas, we host a festive get together in the house.

We're lucky enough to have a team of volunteers who regularly visit the house and help residents with trips to the doctors and local shops. We also have links with local schools and often invite young people in to read to our residents and play board games.

What's on the menu

We love to cook and eat at Abbeyfield House. The standard of cooking by our staff is excellent and the varied meals that they provide are regularly praised by our residents. We grow as many vegetables, soft fruit and herbs in the house garden as we can and always use them in our meals.

Some of our favourite dishes include:

Ottolengi Pancakes
Cheesecake
Meringues
Sunday roast
Tea and cakes

All dietary requirements are catered for. You can see some of the dishes our housekeepers have produced on the Abbeyfield Dulwich website or Twitter.
