Ron's Story

During the Christmas period of 2014 there were over 400 events nationwide, helping over 500 older people, people like Ron. Shortly before Christmas 2013 Ron’s beloved wife died.  They’d been married for more than forty years. Ron was devastated and just fell apart. Fortunately, thanks to donations to our Christmas campaign, Abbeyfield was there to help.

“It had always been just the two of us, we’d done everything together...except at Christmas when her sister would come for the day – but she’d also passed away earlier that year, so I knew I was going to be all alone”.

Through our Christmas campaign Ron, was paired with his local Abbeyfield in Cowes.

“Everyone was so friendly, and welcoming. I knew it wasn’t the same as having my wife beside me, but there were people who understood what I was going through, and really cared.”

Throughout the year Abbeyfield reaches out to isolated older people in local communities across the UK – but it’s at Christmas that our work is even more vital.

As Ron looks forward to spending his third Christmas with his friends at Abbeyfield, we need more donations so we can offer this same hand of friendship and support to others like him.

By giving just a small amount you can help us raise a smile on an older person's face over Christmas.

  • £50 could pay for an entertainer
  • £25 could pay for a traditional Christmas dinner with all the trimmings, and a present
  • £10 could pay for a taxi ride
