Nonsuch Abbeyfield, a new Independent Living with Extra Care scheme managed by the Abbeyfield Southern Oaks Society (ASOS), held its official opening on 8th April.

The complex in Ewell, Surrey, invited residents, friends, trustees and dignitaries to a champagne reception. The official opening has been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and moving was delayed for a number of new residents. However, it is now nearing full occupancy, and residents are allowed to make use of all the fitness suite, restaurant, community garden and other facilities.

Journalist and TV presenter Andrea McLean cut the ribbon, and the Mayor of Ewell, Cllr. Peter O’Donovan unveiled a memorial plaque, in the presence of Chris Grayling MP.

Trustee Graham Walker gave a brief history of the Society and thanked those who had contributed to its success over the past 60 years, and who played a part in Nonsuch Abbeyfield’s construction. A toast to the scheme concluded the proceedings, following which guests were invited to take a tour.

Resident Ray Kasey said, “I have lived here from the first day in March 2020 and enjoyed it ever since. I get on with the other residents and have three good friends with whom I reminisce about our sporting days. I enjoy the activities, including the Tuesday night film club, and use the gym regularly. With everything I need on my doorstep, I rarely need to leave.”

Volunteer Anne Carrington – whose mother was a co-founder of the Purley house – said, “The people here represent the story of Nonsuch Abbeyfield. I grew up with the organisation and it is wonderful to be here today to celebrate a new chapter.”
