A Right Royal Knees-up!

As King Charles III ascended to the throne on May 6th 2023, Abbeyfield communities nationwide joined in the festivities, sipping tea, hanging bunting, and baking up a storm to mark the occasion. From near and far, residents commemorated the coronation, showcasing their joy and patriotism in various heartwarming ways.

After 8 months of fulfilling Royal duties, King Charles III was crowned in a grand traditional ceremony on May 6th, alongside his wife, Queen Camilla. The coronation marked the first of its kind in 70 years; a monumental moment in history that brought people from all walks of life across the United Kingdom together to celebrate the dawning of a new era for the country.

Our houses and homes were filled with a grand atmosphere, buzzing with a wide range of exciting events, from creative crafts and delectable cakes (including our competition to 'bake a cake or cupcakes fit for a king'), to spectacular parties and rousing sing-a-longs. While some residents took the opportunity to reminisce about the previous coronation, reflecting on how different life was back then, the spirit of celebration brought everyone together, creating a sense of joy and unity that will long be remembered.

In this blog, we'll revisit the activities that took place at our houses and homes.

Residents relished a diverse range of activities, featuring lively entertainers, delicious food and drinks, crafts, vibrant flowers, and cherished moments spent together under the warm sunshine.

The celebrations continued throughout the week, with both staff and residents wholeheartedly embracing the moment. The jubilant expressions on their faces speak volumes! We were particularly thrilled to witness some spontaneous dancing taking place, adding to the merriment and cheer.

Ladies of Pratt House enjoyed some coronation-themed knitting, crafting charming union jack hearts and a color-coordinated scarf as a delightful keepsake of the occasion.

The fun went on as residents and staff gathered in houses and homes, with some even joining the jubilant street parties alongside their neighbors and friends. Royal-themed props added a touch of humour, eliciting a good-natured chuckle from everyone.

Here are just some of the mouth-watering creations as part of our 'Bake a cake fit for a King' competition. It's going to be a tough call to find a winner. Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to all those who have baked a belter as part of our competition.

Our social media pages have been awash with red, white and blue, and we’ve loved sharing all the wonderful photos of activities and events held in celebration of the King's Coronation. Head over to our Facebook page to see more photos and read all about what each of our houses and homes got up to. A final thanks to our Abbeyfield family, residents, staff and friends, for marking the King's coronation in such special ways.
