Our patron passed away on 18th June

We have been mourning the loss of Dame Vera Lynn, who passed away on Thursday 18th June at the age of 103.

As well as being the nation's sweetheart during wartime and a symbol of peace and hope for many years, Dame Vera was also a patron and ambassador of The Abbeyfield Society and cared deeply about our cause.

Our Chaiman, Ian Plaistowe, has written the following:

"We were all deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Dame Vera Lynn on Thursday morning. She was a valued Patron and member of the Abbeyfield Family since joining us in December 2009.

A familiar figure to many of our residents from an early age, they once again recalled her wartime efforts fondly this year while taking part in the VE 75 celebrations. Dame Vera embodied the spirit and ethos of Abbeyfield – the pioneering attitude, togetherness and community values – making her the perfect ambassador for our organisation."

She will be sorely missed and our thoughts are with her loved ones.

Rest in peace Dame Vera Lynn, you will be missed (1917 - 2020).
