Abbeyfield Court in Locks Heath has become the first Abbeyfield home to be accredited with the prestigious Bronze Award given by The Food for Life Campaign.

Run by the British Soil Association, the campaign centres around promoting good food, ensuring people view making healthy, tasty and sustainable meals as the norm. They work hard to reconnect people with where their food comes from, providing education on how it’s grown and cooked, while championing the importance of well-sourced ingredients.

This bronze award provides validation that all ingredients used in meal preparation at Abbeyfield Court are traceable and from sustainable sources. It shows our residents that their food is fresh, free from nasty additives and that it meets all necessary nutritional guidelines.

Why is good nutrition so important for older people?

Food is a massive part of daily lives across Abbeyfield homes – it is that time of the day where everyone comes together to catch up and enjoy a delicious, home-cooked meal. Not only that, it provides residents with structure, routine and is always something people look forward to.

But far more than being a social thing, meal times are crucial to ensuring our residents remain healthy and have plenty of nutrious food in their diets.

Good nutrition is important throughout our lives, but is vital for combatting age related conditions in later life such as heart disease, bone health and even dementia. With apetites decreasing and tastes changing with age, it is essential that older people continue to enjoy a healthy, balanced diet to avoid malnutrition and dehydration.

“Whilst nutrition is of utter most importance, by far the biggest visible benefit from this is the coming together, sharing a meal,” says Neil Thompson, Service Development Manager for Abbeyfield. “It’s the sense of family, of belonging.

“The aromas of a well cooked meal eaten with likeminded people can stimulate conversation and stir memories of pastimes.”

Congratulations to the team at Abbeyfield Court. We’re delighted that many more of our houses will be preparing themselves for certification over the coming months.
