How can I help Abbeyfield?
Volunteers have always been vital element of Abbeyfield. Not only do they provide practical assistance to our residents, they also offer much needed companionship. Volunteers take pleasure in their work, seeing the difference they make in helping older people to enjoy the high standard of living they deserve.

If you're considering volunteering your services to your local Abbeyfield society, you'll no doubt have a few questions for us. These are some of the most frequent questions we receive from prospective volunteers:
What can I do to help?
There are many things you can do to help as a volunteer. You can become a trustee; you can join a house committee and manage its house and staff; you can become a friend to the residents; take them shopping and to health appointments; organise social activities… In short, provide companionship and assistance to enable residents make the most of their lives.
What does Abbeyfield expect from its volunteers?
All volunteers are asked to sign a 'volunteer's agreement', which clearly lays out the commitment Abbeyfield expects from them. We expect our volunteers to take a flexible approach to their work. They must be reliable and always endeavour to do what they agree to do. They also must be committed to the values and spirit of Abbeyfield.
The amount of time volunteers are expected to give is decided by mutual agreement between the volunteer and a representative of their Abbeyfield society. This is set out in the terms of their agreement.
What will I get out of volunteering?
People benefit in many different ways by working as an Abbeyfield volunteer. They get to put their skills to good use and have the opportunity to learn new ones; they devote their spare time to a worthy cause; they get to become a part of a caring team, and they get to take pleasure in helping our residents to enjoy a comfortable, fulfilling life.
Will I be paid out-of-pocket expenses?
We repay all out-of-pocket expenses, such as travel costs, telephone calls, and the like. All reimbursements are made within the guidelines set out by Abbeyfield.
Will I be supported in my work?
You'll be supported by a member of staff or other volunteers. He or she will meet with you regularly. You'll also meet with other volunteers as you get involved and attend formal and informal meetings.
