Staveley House, Official opening of Bechshaw Wing
The Lord Lieutenant of Cumbria, Mr James Cropper, performed the official opening ceremony on Tuesday 18th March by unveiling a commemorative plaque in the entrance to the new Bechshaw Wing at Staveley House in Cumbria.
Amongst those who joined, residents and volunteers were the chairman of Staveley House Ken Staveley and his wife Jackie, Donald Shaw and his daughter Caroline (relatives of our principal benefactor Mrs Beatrice Shaw), Michael Staff (Chairman of the national Abbeyfield Society), Tom Meredith (Abbeyfield North West Regional Chairman), the mayors of Barrow and Dalton-in-Furness), and representatives of other local Abbeyfield Societies.
Mr Cropper recalled that it had been his privilege to lay the Foundation Stone of the original Staveley House some 13 years ago, he still had the commemorative silver trowel on display at his home, and was delighted to see the house had prospered so well that it had been necessary to extend the facilities to accommodate the number of people who wished to be cared for in it. This was a great tribute to the care provided by the staff and volunteers at the home.
He later helped to cut the 'Bechshaw Wing' cake which had been specially baked and decorated for the occasion by the kitchen staff. Another very pleasant ceremony followed when 6 members of staff and 3 volunteers who had completed 10 years of service at Staveley House were presented with certificates and specially inscribed commemorative paper weights by Michael Staff and Tom Meredith. Light refreshments and tours of the building brought an end to both a very enjoyable day and fulfilment of this very worthwhile project.
