Mayor of Bromley to visit Abbeyfield House

On Saturday 20th February the Mayor of Bromley, Councillor Douglas Auld, and the Lady Mayoress will be visiting the Abbeyfield House in Bromley. Founded in 1976, Abbeyfield Bromley is an autonomous society providing secure, supported and affordable accommodation for up to 20 elderly people, many of them of limited means. The society accommodates up to 20 elderly residents in two houses on the same site. The current average age of the residents is in the 90s and three of them are over 100 years old!

Abbeyfield is a unique partnership of residents, salaried staff and a team of volunteers. Invariably, the first comment of visitors to Abbeyfield Bromley is what a very nice place it is.  The stereotype of the “old peoples’ home” just doesn’t apply there.  The residents have the freedom to do as they please with the comfortable assurance that all the services they need – food, cleaning, laundry, facilities for disabled living – are reliably provided.  The premises are clean and airy and the atmosphere is that of a community rather than a “home”.

Before lunch, the Mayor will be invited to unveil a plaque marking the formal opening of a new extension to one of the two residential houses. The extension has transformed what was a rather cramped dining and sitting area into an airy and pleasant space in which the residents can sit, socialise and have their meals.  The building work was finished in October last year and the fitting out has just been completed.

If you would like to visit the house or for further information please contact Abbeyfield Bromley on 020 8460 7431 or visit http://www.abbeyfieldbromley.org.uk.
